Yeah I’ve done this. I was trained in the basics of music theory in high school back in the 1960s. I learned more from Jerry Coker’s book “Improvising Jazz”. I learned about modes long ago but only how they relate to modern music very recently. Yes, a piano or keyboard is very helpful for understanding those things. Has it helped my guitar playing? Not a bit. It will help some however so hopefully the one percent will take it and run with it. I wish them all the best.
